This is a big weekend at the Film School with MFA graduation and our annual Fund Raising Gala.  The Dean has brought  in three very cool alums this week, for our students to meet and hang out with – a writer, an executive and a filmmaker with his feature film.  This is the plan: Thursday, 2:15pm, SLC Theater - "Discussion with Screenwriter T.S. Nowlin"  -- T.S. Nowlin (BFA '03) has three features currently in production or development: The Maze Runner from 20th CenturyFox, directed by fellow classmate Wes Ball (BFA '02); Our Name Is Adam from Paramount Pictures, starring Tom Cruise; and Agent 13 from Universal Pictures, starring Charlize Theron.  He's also writing the screenplay for the 20th Century Fox feature Ruin, which will be directed by Wes Ball and based on the popular short film. Friday, 10:00am, SLC Theater - "Discussion with Executive Stephen Broussard"  -- Stephen Broussard (MFA '03) is Senior Vice President of Production and Development at Marvel Studios, where he is responsible for creative oversight of the studio’s slate of feature projects.  His credits include Captain America: The First Avenger and The Incredible Hulk, and he most recently executive produced Iron Man 3, currently the 5th highest-grossing movie of all time.   Friday, 2:00pm,, SLC Theater - "Screening of The A-List and Discussion with writer/director Will Bigham" -- Will Bigham (MFA '04) landed on the national stage after winning the realty show "On the Lot." His prize, which was given to him by Steven Speilberg, was a one-year development deal that included a million dollars and an office at DreamWorks Studios. We will be screening Will's first feature film, The A-List, a high-school comedy about a student who is coerced by his guidance counselor into fulfilling a list of her high school fantasies in order to graduate. And in addition to all that we screened the D2 films last night, and will screen MFA 13 Thesis Films on Saturday, are  having a Writer’s Showcase on Friday, and our Gala Reception/Dinner on Saturday. Fun times! Big news from Jason Doty (MFA  00)  “ Focus Features has optioned Deprivation, an action thriller script from Jason Doty.  It’s the writer’s first sale.  Story follows a desperate man who, three days after his family dies mysteriously in a fire, discovers he can travel back in time if he never falls asleep.  Project will be produced by Process Media’s Tim Perell.  Doty teaches screenwriting and film production at Purdue University and is repped by UTA and Schreck, Rose, Dapello & Adams LLC.”  NOTE:  I asked Jason to send me the story of how he managed to sell a script and get an agent while living in Indiana.  It’s a great read; if you’d like to read it just respond to this email and ask me to send you a copy. Delighted to report that Julianna Baggott, Film School Screenwriting Associate Professor will be the featured speaker at the FSU Summer Graduation Ceremonies!  Julianna is a critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling novelist, as well as screenwriter, essayist, and poet; she is the author of eighteen books that appear under her own name as well as the pen names Bridget Asher and N.E. Bode. From Jennie Townsend (BFA 08)  “Christa Markley (BFA 08)  and I are teaming up for the first time since graduating to work on The Pull! It is an independently-produced, multi-national feature set to film in Glasgow during the month of August. Designed to be a love letter to the city, from both native and outsider perspectives, The Pull is an exploration of what it means to be home, find home, and search for home.  We've set up the blog thepullfilm.wordpress.com so that people can follow our progress and donate to help us get it made. We all know that any amount helps in the independent filmmaking game! "To our MFA Thesis graduating class of 2013, it was wonderful to have had the opportunity to meet you and to work with you this past semester. I wish you a wonderfully healthy, joyous and prosperous journey as you build your professional careers as filmmakers. - Paul Cohen, Filmmaker In Residence" From Susan (Shackelford) Dawes (MFA 91) .  “Happy to report I worked as a dialogue editor on "The Wolverine" (in theaters now!).  Hope it is well-received and much enjoyed, it was fun to work on it.” From Donna Wheeler (MFA 91)  “I want to reach out to feature producers who are alumni in Los Angeles area for a $2-3M Drama I'm working on. The film is looking to hire producer(s) who are adept and comfortable in that budget range, with good track records. The project is akin to a Rachel Getting Married meets The Descendants. Log line: A reckless and uncaring woman, driven by guilt from the past, helps rescue an abandoned child from a family betrayal. Here's the tag line:  The new musical, Zuccotti Park, chronicles the passionate ideals and tumultuous times of the beginning of the Occupy Movement through the fictional story of a young soldier who--while crossing paths with protesters in New York City--must come to terms with how our country's financial system is run and learn what it really means to be an American.  We are now fundraising and I would appreciate any amount of support they could give. Warren Report 8/9/13

We had a marvelous time last weekend with our MFA graduation, great films, our alumni guests, and the fundraising Golden Gala! The following awards were given to graduating students:  The Pathfinder Award (Sam and Wes Strickland)—Curtis AdairThe Moore Family Award for Academic Excellence—Ben FredmanThe Matthew Lopez Writing Award—Ira BrownCan’t wait till next year! Sad news to share.   Dr. Donald Ungurait, one of the founders of the Film School, passed away this week in South Florida after a long battle with cancer.  Don successfully worked the halls of the Legislature in the late 1980's to get the film school approved for FSU rather than at another state university.   My years of working with him in establishing the Film School were an amazing ride, chaotic, and crazy, but he did something I don't believe anyone else at that time could have done in getting the approvals needed to start the Film School.  He certainly left a wonderful legacy and I'm proud to have known him.  Vicki Oldham and Richard Travis (both MFA '91) had visited him Memorial Day weekend, for which we are all thankful.  I've talked with his son David, who is still with Cineworks, and they are hoping to have a memorial/tribute in Tallahassee at a later date. From Sylwia Dudzinska (MFA 09)  “I just finished the low budget movie "Stuck" yesterday and am now on to the next low budget starting Monday!  I'll the 2nd 2nd on Helen Hunt's "Ride."  So I guess over the next month or so I'm going to learn a lot about surfing :)” From Steven Anderson (BFA 08)   “As of this year, I'm an associate post-producer at Soapbox Films.  Over the last couple years, I've also been Post Production Supervisor on a few of Soapbox's feature films as well as editor on a couple projects.  One of my latest endeavors has been a fun trip back to childhood for a biopic on the 90's band TLC.  Check out the teaser I produced that was released two weeks ago (link below).  With Soapbox handling all stages of filmmaking/marketing (writing through editing), I've learned a lot working there over the years and it's been a great home.  Outside of Soapbox, I've been working on a feature script for a coming-of-age/sci-fi that takes place almost entirely on the ocean - excited for this one!  And lastly, on a personal note, I'll soon be traveling to Israel for birthright with my brother from August 12 - 22 - my first time overseas!http://www.vh1.com/video/misc/939973/first-look-a-vh1-original-movie-crazysexycool-the-tlc-story-teaser.jhtml From Iran Kuykendall (BFA 08)  “I AD'd the International Stills Shoot for "American Horror Story: Coven" over the past week. They will shoot their third season in New Orleans, and began Production recently, first week in August.   In March, we began pre-production on "Bonnie & Clyde: dead & alive", which is the next mini-series for Sony Pictures. It will air simultaneously on A&E, History and Lifetime this winter. Bruce Beresford ("Breaker Morant", "Driving Miss Daisy") directed, and it was a wonderful experience to act as his Second 2nd AD. After 22 days of prep and forty-five days of production, our AD Team took three days off and began prep on Michael Bay produced "Occult", a pilot episode for Disney/ABC Family. James Wong (X-Files) wrote the script that Rob Bowman ("Reign of Fire") directed. It felt like we were shooting a $60M action film in 13 days. We did not have $60M.  A great number of shows are slated to begin pre-production in New Orleans in the following weeks, including Pirates 5, Fast7, 22nd Jump Street & Fantastic Four (Baton Rouge). With the state of Louisiana's continued support of the tax incentive program, the continued development of crew and infrastructure, marquee films continue to pour into the area. Two television series have opened offices, and their First Seasons will begin within the month. And looking forward to October, my first film as Key 2nd AD will hit theaters, a throwback to Monster movies of the 80's, "Nothing Left to Fear". A logistical nightmare, it was: Minors, Fx Make-up (their turn-arounds), Teamster BBQ's, Animals and Night-shoots. But Slash (G-n-R) produced for Director Anthony Leonardi, and my wife Katie was the Production Coordinator. In the time being, I'm taking a vacation to build forts & play tummy time with my son, Sawyer, who was born in January.” From Justin Inda (MFA  00)  "I'm  married and just welcomed my second son, Rylan, to the world. Kenji, my oldest son is two so they are keeping us quite happy and busy. Kinda feels like film school with the lack of sleep and constant work to be done. Work is going well, currently I am a producer/editor for a discovery series called Alaska the Last Frontier. We just started our third season and since I've been on the show from the beginning it kind of feels like my other baby.  " From Matthew Barnette (MFA 12)  “It's true! Soapbox has indeed decided to keep me on as a Staff Writer. (Note:  Matthew was a paid story intern there for a couple of semesters)  It's a great place to work full of great people and some really, REALLY cool projects.” Dean Emeritus Ray Fielding has become a regular contributor to MEDIA ETHICS, a critical journal devoted principally to media coverage of national politics and world affairs. Dean Fielding’s commentaries are intended for student journalists, and are written in the manner  of ‘The Screwtape Letters,’ created by the British author C.S. Lewis.  His current article deals with journalistic coverage of the private lives of political leaders. ‘So far,’ he says, ‘no one has thrown a rock through my window.’ From Carmen Jones Madison (BFA 97)   “I've been back in Atlanta and with Turner Broadcasting for about 8 years now, where I'm a Marketing Project Manager for Turner Entertainment Networks.  So, I've been "Producing" campaigns for shows across the TBS, TNT and TCM networks including Major Crimes, Perception, Conan, 31 Days of Oscar and three Tyler Perry sitcoms.  Even taught a few courses in alum Jason Rodgers' Media Dept. at AIU Atlanta.  Met with Tom Cappello (BFA 95)  recently and asked if he knew of any other Film School alums in Atlanta and he mentioned only one.  So, I'd love to connect with others in Atlanta, especially since we're experiencing such a Production boom and there must be more of us here!  Email me at: foxboxrox@hotmail.com  From Elizabeth (Meou) Yu (MFA  11)  “The romantic comedy that I was working on last year called "One Night Surprise" is opening on Aug. 9th nation wide in China. It was directed, written and produced by one of our Alumni Eva  (Yimeng) Jin (MFA 03) . I was production coordinator on the show but couldn't finish the project because I have to come back to US before my US visa was expired and be reunited with my husband. I worked for the project for 7 months total including partially work from when the script was still developing. I learned a lot from working with Eva and see a different way of making films in China.” Bandito Brothers Post Production Intern“Post Production Internship available for a committed student with an editorial, motion graphic or systems management focus needed to support a busy post-production environment in Culver City.  Your internship would involve a variety of tasks based on the skills you bring to the table.
