Warren Report 9/12/13

Manohla Dargis and A. O. Scott, film critics for The New York Times, have a list of 20 Directors to Watch and our own Barry Jenkins (BFA 03) is among them!  Go to http://tinyurl.com/nlzlm96 to read about Barry and be sure to watch his short video on how he writes!   Soooooo proud! From Brenda Mills:  “If you're paying attention to the festival world, you've probably already heard of Short Term 12 (a feature based on a successful short), which premiered at SXSW this year. It's had a lot of positive buzz and was cut by none other than our own alum Nat Sanders (BFA 02).  Here's the film's website: http://shortterm12.com/. It'll be playing here in Tallahassee next Sunday, September 15 at 3:30pm at the Challenger Center IMAX theater, brought to us by the newest incarnation of the Tallahassee Film Festival. Check it out: http://fameintally.com/short-term-12/. Congratulations to Savage Bell (BFA 94) who is now Executive Producer for IBM out of their Atlanta office, but living and working out of Santa Rosa Beach! From Joe Papa (BFA  10)  “Since graduating, I've been fighting my way up the ladder at Oasis (a lit management/production company started by ex William Morris VP David Lonner). I started as an intern in February 2011 and just last week was asked to step up to the plate as the 1st assistant to the CEO (David). I've picked up Executive Assistant credits on many projects in pre-production as well as a network TV show, Devious Maids, which was just renewed for a second season. A few months ago I completed a screenplay and was read by David and another manager/producer - they liked the concept and tone and asked me to pitch them any other ideas I had. With them as my 'commercialization' mentors, I'm developing two awesome story ideas that they will help find funding for and produce, with me on as a writer/director. It's been a tough and schizophrenic road, and I'm sure it will continue to be (la vita é cosi) but I have to say I feel very blessed and fortunate. I couldn't have done it without the life skills I learned in film school - and the most important thing I learned from film school so far would have to be, take any opportunity that comes your way - you never know who they are or what they can do to help you. And also, stay positive :-) From Ashley Miller (MFA 08)  “I have just been brought on as the Communications Officer for the national women's reproductive access group Provide.  I will be in charge of all their communications and, among my many responsibilities, I may even be initiating some promotional video work for them.  I have also just passed my comprehensive exams, meaning that I am officially a "PhD Candidate/ABD", with only a 200 page dissertation between me and making people call me doctor.” Devyn Waitt’s (BFA 07)  film Not Waiving But Downing has been posted for free viewing by the filmmakers in 2013.

From Jen Ligler (BFA 12)   “I finished my production internship with Dreamworks at the end of April when I took a job in the mailroom at Dreamworks in order to stay connected to the company. Now- 4 months later- I've been promoted back into production as a Production Assistant on the same show that I interned for! I'm really excited to see my name in the credits of the Penguins of Madagascar Movie in March of 2015!” Brandi Bradburn Holland (MFA  99) has been an Editor on Hart of Dixie for several years and is adding Director to her list of credits!  She will be directing Episode 307, “I Run to You” .  I’ll let you know later when its going to air. From Jason Benoit (BFA 06)  “Has a book, “I Hope It Doesn’t Burn When I Pee”, available now on Amazon at http://preview.tinyurl.com/n6ktjpu  It is a series of one man's comedic triumphs... Oh who are we kidding, this is about a crap ton of hilarious life failures. Those face plants we take right into the proverbial concrete. Sure, maybe there's a few possible life lessons sprinkled throughout but don't hold me to such a promise. But... if you like laughing at other people's misery, then I can tell you that this is the book for you. As an up and coming film and television writer, Jason Benoit has decided to chronicle into this book some of the greatest hits from his life's misadventures. From the time he thought he broke his dog's penis to his fearful encounter with retrograde ejaculation. From losing his virginity in the most unlikeliest of places to writing a film about a bag of human excrement. You'll laugh, you’ll cry (no promises), you’ll learn how to deliver babies with your bare hands (unconfirmed), and you very well could even learn a few life lessons.”  NOTE:  Its definitely adult humor! From Joe Papa (BFA  10)  "For rent - downstairs bedroom and office plus the downstairs bathroom in my house in the Eagle Rock Hills. Total private square footage is over 270, common areas are around 1,200 square feet. Private entry into bedroom/office, large front deck, upstairs balcony, and back patio. Brand new washer/dryer and kitchen appliances, downstairs common area houses a custom 5.1 home theater system tuned to Dolby standards.  I am an executive assistant to a seasoned Exec Producer (and artist on the side, of course). My family is from Sicily and I am obsessed with international culture and cuisine, all forms of art, electronic engineering, and auto mechanics. My girlfriend Erica, who also has a room upstairs, is 24 (from Massachusetts/Rhode Island) and works at a film publicity agency managing product placement in Film and TV.
