Warren Report 9/26/13

From Elliott Sutherland (MFA 13):  “"Terrestrials", the screenplay Teresa (Sutherland (MFA 12)  and I wrote while at FSU, is still doing well. Finalist in the Drama Category at NYC Screenplay Contest. We'll know next month about slamdance!    Evan McNary (MFA 06) was also a finalist but in the Thriller Category at the NYC Screenplay Contest with two scripts  “AngelHeads” and  “Damascus”. Congratulations to Morten Brante (MFA 93) who has just been appointed as Senior Vice President for Promethean’s new Services Division.  You can read about the exciting things they will be doing at http://www.sys-con.com/node/2795260 Congratulations to Dana Brooks, Film School Development Officer in West Palm Beach!   She received the Athena Award which honors individuals, businesses, and young professionals, who have achieved professional excellence, mentored, actively served the community, and helped women to reach their leadership potential.   From Kyle Reid (MFA  11)  “Goodfriends, a short film I shot last year in Baton Rouge, LA with director Jerod Hollyfield, recently premiered at the Knoxville Film Festival where it won the night's Audience Award. This film would not have happened without the dedication of several FSU alum including, Producer, Jaye Davidson (MFA, 2010), Camera Assistant, Tara Clark (MFA, 2011), and Editor, Dustin McLean (MFA, 2012). This short film follows a mentally disabled grocery bagger, Billy, who uses people's perceptions of him to push social norms and pursue impossible romantic relationships. Keep an eye out for upcoming screenings at the Louisville International Film Festival on Oct 12th, and at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival on Nov. 1st.” From Joey D’Alessandro (BFA 95)  “I am working for Viacom which doesn't have any real offices in Vancouver so I work remotely for their New York Office. I work in the technical training department which is part of Viacom Human Resources. I moved to Vancouver with my partner, Eno Park last year.” From Bruce Bullock (MFA 1994):  “After finishing up an adjunct teaching gig at Palm Beach State courtesy of Michael Seminerio (MFA 2003), I relocated back to Jacksonville, Florida where I have been able to devote my time and energy to an animated feature project, "Dawgtown," to which I have been (quietly) attached as co-producer since 2011. This project has been in the works for a few years now, under the creative leadership of Director/Producer Justin Murphy.   "Dawgtown" is ramping up now with pencil tests, animatics and opening credit sequences well under way, active interest from major A List voice talent, and press releases on AnimationNation.com and Showmetheanimation.com.  Last fall, we were pleased and proud to have our first FSU student intern, Dylan Chase (BFA Animation and Digital Arts), provide some excellent 3D animation work for the opening sequence (which you may see in the video on the Kickstarter link below).  We hope to provide many more internship opportunities to FSU students as we move forward with the project.  We also anticipate being able to employ animators, in-betweeners and ink-and-paint artists here in Florida.  This is an indie animated film with the look of old-school but using new tools.  "Gladiator meets Animal Farm"  - it's the story of a young pitbull named Max thrown into the brutal world of underground dogfighting.  Please check us out and spread the word - another FSU crowdsourcing film project needs your support!  Also, a portion of the proceeds from this campaign will go to pitbull rescue and rehab.  http://kck.st/1fk6Bgs.  From Corey Womack (MFA 12)  “The company that Dustin (McLean (MFA 12) , John Wikstrom (BFA 12) and I work for recently disbanded its in-office internship program in response to the Black Swan Lawsuits. However we still have a satellite coverage internship program that people can participate in from anywhere.  I'm in charge of this website -- and I have had a helluva time digging up kids that can meet deadlines with thoughtful notes.  We only require two coverages a week.  This would help your students get a relevant blip on their résumé before ever graduating -- and overcome that transcontinental handicap a little.” From Brenda Mills:  “I just wanted to make sure everyone knows there will be a film festival in Thomasville, October 1-6. They'll be screening some class feature films, like Beasts of the Southern Wild (the writer, Lucy Alibar, will be there for a Q&A afterwards) and The Great Debaters (our own Valerie Scoon will be there with the film as its Associate Producer).  Here's the info..  http://coveyfilmfestival.com/ Off to Biloxi with my gambling ladies – wish me luck!  FSU CMPA Screenings & Awards Update – September 26, 2013 Street Saints (BFA Documentary 2012 Tav Murphy) was selected for screening at the Hell’s Half Mile Film & Music Festival in Bay City, Michigan, September 26-29. Warren Report 10/24/13

From Alex Durham (BFA 06)  “I'm happy to announce that AMC has green-lit my company's next project, King of Arms. The ten episode series will immerse viewers inside the raw and highly competitive world of American arm wrestling. Similar to Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler in terms of tone and style, King of Arms will follow members of five arm wrestling clubs from all across America, and their friends and families, as they hit the road and wager their rent money, reputations and even their relationships in pursuit of a title shot. I will serve as producer and supervising editor of the series. King of Arms, Small Town Security and Freakshow all take viewers inside worlds most have never seen, populated by unique and unforgettable characters," said AMC executive vp of original programming, Joel Stillerman. "We are looking forward to bringing these new and returning series to AMC viewers and are very excited to be working with Undertow Films on our new unscripted original, King of Arms. The show will premiere in the first quarter of next year, timed to the second half of The Walking Dead's current season.”From Lorraine Portman (MFA 99)  “I'm in Austin Wed. Through next Tuesday Oct. 29th for Austin Film Festival.  One of my screenplays made their Second Round.  This is my second year with a screenplay in the Second Round and after such an amazing time last year, am thrilled to be back.  Would love to hook up with any FSU folks. We had a wonderful lunch last year.  Other recent news:  I've optioned award winning comedy "Peace, Love, and Law Enforcement".  Have also optioned family friendly "Zelda's Ever Blooming Flowers", which has been a finalist in several film festival competitions.  Also negotiated a non exclusive option on a very new script, "Paradise Pond", an erotic thriller which just placed as a Quarterfinalist in Screenplay Goldmine.  "Attic Ashes" also is a Quarterfinalist in Screenplay Goldmine as well as Final Draft's Big Break.”  NOTE:  If you are in Austin and want to meet up with Lorraine, reply to this email and I’ll give you her contact information. From Steven Acevado (MFA  05)  “Just wanted to share some good news with you! My latest short film, EL COCODRILO, was named Best Short Film at the 2013 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, which now makes it eligible for an Academy Award nomination, although we're still trying to figure out if it's for 2014 or 2015.” From Raymond Nelson (MFAW 12) “Happy to announce my play Over the River/Under the Trees will be the first production of a group I co-founded with director Rebecca Willett. It's been a whirlwind getting here and wrapping up freelance editing projects for clients.  From Andrew Fairbank (MFA 12)  “I will be in Bulgaria for the next month working on The Expendables 3 and some more awesome content for Udaya Entertainment. Also Bulgarian crafty serves cigarettes. In case you're interested, episodes and info about the show can be found on helpingyoumaintain.com. “ From Steven Anderson (BFA 08)  “Some exciting stuff has been happening at Soapbox Films!  Last week we saw two big projects of ours hit some major milestones.  First, the biopic feature CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story premiered on VH1 with enormous success that has left us all humbled and feeling great!  4.5 million viewers, the most-tweeted about event on television that night, and VH1's most successful original movie ever!  Soapbox did all of the post production (editing, VFX, sound, color, finish) and I was the post production supervisor for the film.  Here's a link to a BTS we made on how the TLC music videos were re-created: http://youtu.be/S2465xZhAk8  And a link to the trailer I produced as well: http://youtu.be/1M2Jhlb3E2Q    Bad Behavior, a horror thriller feature that we co-produced was sold for distribution and the DVD was released last week.  A handful of film school alumni worked on this one - Producers Chris Alender (BFA 98)   and Kris Eber (BFA 99) , DP Craig Kief (BFA 99), Editor Jason Bierfeld (BFA 98) , Post Producer Harry Perry III (BFA 99) , and Assistant Editor Courtney Marcilliat (BFA 09)!  Here's a link to the DVD on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Bad-Behavior-Hirsh/dp/B00EDAGZU2  The movie features Linda Hamilton (Terminator), Ted McGinely (Happy Days, Married with Children, Love Boat), and Halle Hirsch (ER).” From Michelle Pullam (mom or Zac Pullam, young actor in many of our films):  “We can now announce that Zac Pullam has booked a new Pilot TV show! We are beyond excited and so very thankful to everyone who has supported us on this amazing journey! We will let you know when it airs. We start shooting next month! Check out the article :  http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/skins-star-lands-lead-role-650260 From Miles Kahn (BFA 97)  “On the10/29 Daily Show, I managed to cast former FSU Film "near-alum" Rene Delefont (he dropped out to pursue acting, but shot my Freshman film), and FSU grad, Matt Stanton, who played the lead in my senior thesis film.  Matt is the co-founder of Dad's Garage Theater Company in Atlanta and Rene is the assoc. artistic director there. The MFA class of 2014 has just started the Kickstarter campaign for our thesis films! Our class has 17 directing, 3 cinematography and 1 producing specialists all working on 17 thesis films. These unique projects will require expenses beyond the budget we have from the school. For example, we have a film about miniature garden gnomes, requiring green screen shoots and VFX. There is also another film about an Amish alien settlement which will call for extensive production design, horses (and their wranglers) and more VFX, as well as several stories involving people of specific ethnicities and languages, many of whom must be cast out of New York or LA. These are just a few examples of the ambitious projects in this years thesis line-up. Check out the rest on our Kickstarter page. We’re excited to tell these stories and hope you’ll contribute in whatever way you can! Also, check our page each week for a new update video with more information about specific projects and our preparations! Thank you! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1389743639/fsu-film-school-2014-mfa-thesis-films Raymond Nelson (MFAW12) is one of the few Film School alums who is in Chicago, and I had asked him to give me some info about life in Chicago.  Just thought several of you might be interested in what he wrote: “Chicago is a great city with a lot of great art and hardworking artists. I came here on the advice of Sheri Wilner (our playwriting instructor) and Gary Garrison (Director of Creative Affairs at the Dramatists Guild). It's become the place to be for new writers. The rent of both housing and performance space is way cheaper than in NYC. This has allowed theaters to take risks on young writers, or like me, writers can produce their own work relatively cheap. Also, anyone who's looking to get into comedy, either writing or acting, then this is a great place to be. Chicago is home to Second City and iO (both are farming systems for SNL), and they both offer classes and possibilities to get seen. Another thing that's happening is that many Chicago playwrights are getting snatched up by Hollywood TV producers for their writing staffs. I know at least two or three who have went out there to work on shows within the past year. This, of course, requires some buzz around your writing and knowing the right people. This is the route that I'm working towards. I'll keep you posted on that.  As for film work, I can't honestly say. I know there's some production companies in town, but I assume they do a lot of commercials and corporate media. There's a few shows that shoot in town (like Chicago Fire), and Transformers was here last month. They may be bringing crews from out of town, though. Honestly, I'd probably look towards Michigan if someone wants to work in the Midwest. I have friends with constant work on film sets in Michigan. I'd be happy to provide a contact if anyone is ever interested.” From Monique Florez (FSU theatre alum and actress in many of our student films):  "Shoot Your Way To The Top" is a documentary that empowers artists to make their own creative projects while overcoming the budget obstacles that stop artists from creating their own work. We have interviewed over 14 amazingly talented artists like Steven Sears, co-executive producer and writer of "Xena: Warrior Princess," Sam Spiegel, composer and director of films and commercials who share inspiration, advice and obstacles they overcame. Every successful big-time filmmaker like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and James Cameron started small making their own short films. We can all do it too, specially if we help each other out! http://www.facebook.com/l/mAQG9TFCPAQEJRzN6VSQLW3rlbSl_BgBFmjlMx7qPrj2QTA/www.kickstarter.com/projects/imaginekingdom/shoot-your-way-to-the-top Actor/Rapper Ice Cube  and Film Producer Will Packer will be at FSU on Wednesday, Nov. 6th promoting their new film "Ride Along".  There will be a "meet and greet" session on the Woodward Walkway at the Integration Statute by Oglesby Union at 4:00 PM.  Free Passes to attend the advanced screening of "Ride Along" are available now at the Askew Student Life Center Information Desk while they last.
