Warren Report 11/7/13
The Torchlight Program is honored to once again serve the College of Motion Picture Arts in collaboration with the Collegiate Veterans Association and the President's office in presenting the Third Annual Student Veteran Film Festival and Florida State’s Student Veteran Torchlight Award for Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking. The films shown at the first two festivals both went on to receive Oscar nominations. This year's film is Which Way is the Front Line From Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington, directed by Sebastian Junger, who will be in attendance and receive the $25,000 award following the screening. He will also participate in a panel after the screening, which will be moderated by Paul Cohen. Frank Patterson and some special guests will also be on the panel. The film is about Tim Hetherington, a renowned photographer, who was killed in a mortar attack in April 2011 while covering the conflict in Libya. He was 40 years old. Junger traces Hetherington's work across the world's battlefields in the HBO documentary. Junger is the bestselling author of The Perfect Storm, which inspired a feature film, and War, an account of his and Hetherington’s reporting trips to Afghanistan's Korengal Valley in 2007 and 2008. He and Hetherington co-directed 2010’s Restrepo, an Academy Award-nominated ground-breaking documentary about the U.S. combat outpost in that dangerous area in Afghanistan. Restrepo will be screening at the Student Life Center at 4 p.m. tomorrow. The festival itself takes place in Ruby Diamond Auditorium on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11, and begins with a reception in front of Westcott at 3 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. screening of the film. The panel will discuss the film at 5:45 p.m. From Brook Durham (BFA 94) “It's that time of year again, my latest and now ninth Syfy Opus, "Bering Sea Beast" is scheduled to air Saturday, November 9th @ 9 PM —http://www.syfy.com/movies/bering_sea_beast While prospecting for gold, a brother and sister accidentally disturb a colony of sea vampires in an underwater cave. From Sylwia Dudzinska (MFA 09) “I'm on to the next show. A quick stint on another indie feature titled Any Day, with Sean Bean, Eva Longoria, Tom Arnold and Kate Walsh.” From Darren Hoffman (BFA 05) “The New York premiere for TRADITION IS A TEMPLE will be held at the Walter Reade Theater of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts on November 14th at 6:30PM. Tickets can be reserved here: http://www.filmlinc.com/films/on-sale/tradition-is-a-templeThe film will also be digitally released on Tuesday, November 12th, and is currently available for pre-order on iTunes. From Niraj Trivedi (BFA 06) “"Last week my team successfully completed a Kickstarter campaign for a webseries I wrote and will be directing called The Actor Factor. This was possible only because of the strong support we received from FSU Alums! Go 'Noles!" From Kathy Barber (BFA 97), Program Director of the FSU Student Life Center: “At the beginning of the Q&A following "Ride Along" at the FSU SLC last night producer Will Packer gave a big "Thank you" to the FSU Film School for helping him out when he was just starting his film career here in Tallahassee as a FAMU student. He told the sell out crowd that since FAMU did not have a Film School he came to FSU for crew assistance on his early projects and FSU played a big part in helping him get his start.” From Matt Franklin (MFA 96) "I am writing today to reach out to you and your network for help with a project I am researching. I have been working in public television now for eight years and have produced several series for national distribution. One series I am looking at may have a better home on commercial TV. It is a home improvement show centered on rennovations to low income family housing that takes advantage of the new green building practices and technologies. If you or anyone you know would be able to offer me a connection into commercial TV that might sound applicable - HGTV, Scripps Howard, I'll take anything - I would really appreciate it. mfranklin@lakeshorepublicmedia.orgOn a personal note, I am continuing to work for Lakeshore Public Television on the Indiana side of Chicago (we are one of three PBS stations feeding Chicago). I am VP of TV Operations, overseeing the Production, Programming / Traffic , Engineering and Membership departments. We produce a few series for national distribution; Classical Stretch is a workout show that I have directed and shot in Jamaica for five years, and Built to Last and Built to Last:The Green Home we created to promote new building practices. We have a lot of local shows in production and I have finally moved on from producing college basketball games in Chicagoland (over 200!) I am very happy in TV here in Northwest Indiana with my family (one of the big reasons for leaving LA). My eldest son, Riley, is 15 and 6'4". You can see it at http://vimeo.com/78322082, but I wouldn't click it while you're eating. We worked with lots of FSU students and alum: Hayley Heineken (MFA-W 13), Andie McMahon (BFA 12), Xander Robin (BFA 11), Alex Mitchell (BFA 13), Drew Angle (BFA 13), and Zach Johnson (BFA 12). I like to think it has, um, something for everybody, so please, watch and share!” “Last year’s Crash the Super Bowl was good, but this year’s will be legendary!
