Warren Report 11/7/13

The Torchlight Program is honored to once again serve the College of Motion Picture Arts in collaboration with the Collegiate Veterans Association and the President's office in presenting the Third Annual Student Veteran Film Festival and Florida State’s Student Veteran Torchlight Award for Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking. The films shown at the first two festivals both went on to receive Oscar nominations. This year's film is Which Way is the Front Line From Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington, directed by Sebastian Junger, who will be in attendance and receive the $25,000 award following the screening. He will also participate in a panel after the screening, which will be moderated by Paul Cohen. Frank Patterson and some special guests will also be on the panel.  The film is about Tim Hetherington, a renowned photographer, who was killed in a mortar attack in April 2011 while covering the conflict in Libya. He was 40 years old. Junger traces Hetherington's work across the world's battlefields in the HBO documentary. Junger is the bestselling author of The Perfect Storm, which inspired a feature film, and War, an account of his and Hetherington’s reporting trips to Afghanistan's Korengal Valley in 2007 and 2008. He and Hetherington co-directed 2010’s Restrepo, an Academy Award-nominated ground-breaking documentary about the U.S. combat outpost in that dangerous area in Afghanistan.  Restrepo will be screening at the Student Life Center at 4 p.m. tomorrow.  The festival itself takes place in Ruby Diamond Auditorium on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11, and begins with a reception in front of Westcott at 3 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. screening of the film. The panel will discuss the film at 5:45 p.m.  From Brook Durham (BFA  94)  “It's that time of year again, my latest and now ninth Syfy Opus, "Bering Sea Beast" is scheduled to air Saturday, November 9th @ 9 PM —http://www.syfy.com/movies/bering_sea_beast   While prospecting for gold, a brother and sister accidentally disturb a colony of sea vampires in an underwater cave. He told the sell  out crowd that since FAMU did not have a Film School he came to FSU for crew assistance on his early projects and FSU played a big part in helping him get his start.” From Matt Franklin (MFA  96) "I am writing today to reach out to you and your network for help with a project I am researching. Warren Report 11/14/13

From Joanna Truman (BFA 09)  "I am incredibly excited to have my first print publication coming in the December 2013 issue of the literary magazine Luna Station Quarterly. It's a speculative fiction magazine for female writers and they've accepted my short story "Amie & Louie" for their next issue, which comes out December 1st! It will be published as an e-book and the stories will also appear on the LSQ website (http://lunastationquarterly.com). You can read more of my fiction and poetry (I'm currently writing a poem a day for November) at my website, http://joannatruman.com." From John Rito (BFA  94)  “I work at Picture Head which is a post-production facility that specializes in movie marketing. One of our biggest clients is Disney.  And we do all of the finishing for TV marketing for their movies which include all movies for Disney, Marvel, Pixar and DreamWorks.  I am a Post-Production Supervisor and I oversee the entire finishing process including online editing, mixing, graphics and digital paintwork.  My most recent projects have been Thor 2, Monsters University, Iron Man 3, Wreck-It Ralph and The Avengers.”  “From Jon Swindall (MFA '01):  Check out this music video!  I collaborated with 36 other filmmakers to create the new Lovett video - "All The Time".  Each director was given a single line of the song and asked to create one shot for each word.  Our video just got listed as staff pick of the week on Vimeo.  Check it out here: http://bit.ly/1bsbORB “  NOTE:  I know other alums collaborated on this.  Let me know if you did and I’ll include that next week. From Isaac Salpeter (BFA 03)  "After more than 8 years working for Amazon in Seattle, I've moved with my family to the Netherlands (specifically The Hague) to help Amazon's newest software development center get off the ground (http://amazondcn.com). While I've been working in tech rather than the film industry since the turn of the century, I use skills I acquired in film school constantly. That is, how to assemble and work effectively on teams of diverse talents and technical skills to deliver creative projects on time and in budget. It doesn't matter much that those creative projects have been new Kindles or cloud services rather than moving pictures, or that the crews are teams of software developers and system/network engineers instead of grip and camera departments or editors and rerecording mixers.

The hustle and organizational skills I learned at FSU Film mattered most in the end for me, whatever I ended up working on. Please drop me a line if you're interested in a similar trajectory in tech (or just in catching up!) My email address is my first name and last initial @amazon.com." “Think you are funny? Warren Report 11/22/13

Help, please!  We will be doing a mailing to Film School alumni in the next month or so, and know so many of you have moved and not given me a new address.  Please take a minute right now and reply to this email, giving me your current mailing address and phone.  As I am thinking more and more about retirement, if we don’t have good addresses for you, its going to be hard for someone else to track you down and we definitely don’t want to lose you. Last week I posted this: “From Jon Swindall (MFA 01):  Check out this music video!  I collaborated with 36 other filmmakers to create the new Lovett video - "All The Time".  Each director was given a single line of the song and asked to create one shot for each word.  Our video just got listed as staff pick of the week on Vimeo.  Check it out here: http://bit.ly/1bsbORB “  Other alums who collaborated on this are Andrew Hevia (BFA 06), Barry Jenkins (BFA 03)  Adele Romanski, who produced it, (BFA 04),  James Laxton  (BFA 03) Gates Bradley (BFA 02) and Chris Alender (BFA 98). From Susan Bell (MFA 05)  “In September I left my technologist job to take a position as Sr. Project Manger of Interactive at a San Francisco digital agency, only to be offered a job weeks later by NASA! So I am now happily ensconced back in Southern California working for NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) at Caltech. I am an Interactive Producer in the Earth Science division working across all media types: video, web, graphics, social. NASA has many missions and satellites that study the Earth, from the carbon cycle to ocean currents (it's not all about exploring Mars) and I'm happy to be able to contribute in a small way to a better understanding of our home planet. JPL's campus in the foothills of the Angeles National Forest above Pasadena is twice the size of Disneyland and employs 5,000 of the brightest minds you've ever met -- it is so awesome to be here.” Claudia Johnson’s film The Other Side of Silence was the festival’s most-screened entry and received the Gold Jury Prize in Seattle’s Social Justice Film Festival, October 1-13.   Judges said of Johnson’s work “… a brilliant job of exposing hard truths about power and oppression and the unconscious ways our culture tolerates and accepts those structures.” Something to put on your calendars:  Our Film School LA screening will be on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at the Writers Guild. William Brock’s (MFA-W 14) story "Silence" was published in the 6th and final issue of "Trembles Magazine" Friday, Nov 8.   From Seth Epstein (MFA 13)  “Since moving to Los Angeles, I was hired on as key grip on a Canadian grass seed commercial with Vince, the Slap Chop guy, and then as a key grip on a low-budget horror feature with Eric Roberts, who I am happy to say likes Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys :).   My brother Ben (Epstein (BFA 09) and I just co-directed a short together "M is for Milf" that we submitted to the horror competition, "The ABC's of Death 2". It was great to be back in the director's chair, and working with other FSU film alumni Ben Epstein (co-director), Andrew Penczner (BFA 10) (Director of photography), Job Jaime (MFA 13)  (production designer), and Elliot Sutherland (MFA 13) (Asst. Camera). The film starred Kim Poirier who you might remember as the hot slutty girl Monica in the most recent "Dawn of the Dead".   I just produced three music videos the past week, which was quite the feat, but always looking for more to do. Anyway, things are moving along out here, and I hope everyone's doing good back in Tally. See you when you arrive in LA.” Check out Jason Benoit's (BFA 06) blog:  The perks of being a Hollywood assistant...http://hollywoodjournal.com/industry-impressions/the-perks-of-being-a-hollywood-assistant/20131121/ LA:  “Not for profit company looking for young and enthusiastic video editors to help with in house video production. The short form videos we create are used to highlight the work we do around the world and help raise our foundation's awareness.  This is a great opportunity to grow and learn.  The ability to think and edit outside of the box and approach films in an inventive way is a must.  Must be able to read field notes and develop a story arc. Some motion graphics experience would be beneficial but not required.  Please submit a resume and a bit about yourself. Please list all programs that you are proficient in. (i.e. Avid, FCP, Adobe, Photoshop, AE, etc.)  Send resumes to:  starkeyeditor@gmail.com”The FSU Film School will hold open casting calls for Graduate Thesis Films on: Sunday, December 8, 2013 from 10:00AM - 7:00PM.  No appointment needed. No experience necessary.  These auditions are being held to cast specific roles in our 2014 MFA Thesis Films. If you would like to see if there is an appropriate role for you, please visit ourwebsite: http://fsufilmcasting.webs.com/2014thesisfilms.htm On the website you will find a short synopsis of each film as well as character descriptions and script sides. Please choose a role for which you would like to read, and come in prepared to perform that side. What to expect at the audition:  When you come in, we will take a headshot and get some basic info from you (name, contact info, experience, interests, etc.). You may also bring a headshot and/or resume, but it is not necessary. We will bring you into aroom where we will then video record you performing the side you selected. Depending on how many people show up, the whole process can take anywhere from a half hour to about 2 hours. When the students are ready to start casting for their films, they will refer to these auditions to find someone who fits their casting needs. If there is a match, the student will contact you. That's it! The FSU Film School is located in the University Center, Building A (on the north side of the Doak Campbell Stadium), off Pensacola Street atChampions Way, Tallahassee, FL.  For more information about the auditions, please contact Becky Peck, Casting Director, by email at mfacastingfsu@gmail.com. For more information about the MFA Class of 2014, and to contribute to their Kickstarter fundraising campaign, please visit their site at:http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1389743639/fsu-film-school-2014-mfa-thesis-films In the mood for a Hepburn and Bogart classic, hair-raising horror, or seasonal Tim Burton?
