Save the date for FSU’s 6th Annual Sneak Peek event, featuring a preview of the FSU research and creative activity efforts that are working their way into our daily lives. Thursday, October 23, 5:30-9:30 PM at the FSU Turnbull Conference Center. The event is free but space is limited. Pre-Register now at FSU 6th Annual Sneak Peek. The Film School will be a featured school, showing about 90 minutes of our “best of” films. Other highlights of this year’s Sneak Peek event include:Wall-to-wall exhibits showcasing FSU research headed to the marketplaceInformation on new and existing companies created through FSU research endeavorsLive technology demonstrations by FSU researchers and their studentsSpecial surprises from the FSU Master Craftsmen Studio and FSU College of Motion Picture ArtsBrief remarks by Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Executive Director Jesse PanuccioThe event is hosted by the FSU Office of Research and sponsored by Thomas Howell Ferguson P.A. This past Wednesday night, 15 FSU student films were featured in a newly created event called the Target Film Festival. This event was created to allow the Film School to showcase and celebrate the creativity and hard work of its students. The festival took place at the beautiful Shiloh Chapel and Barn just outside of town and included transportation, food, and a lot of fun. At the end of the night a People's Choice Award was given to the films with the most attendee votes (there was a tie for first!). Awards went to Ashlea Patterson (MFA 2) for Birthday Box and Jon Sams (BFA 3) for The Surreal and the Self. It was a great night with good (although very humid) weather, and it was a much-needed hours-long break from the hustle and bustle of the Fall semester. A big thank you to Target for thinking of the Film School for this event! FSU's Hilarity for Charity donation campaign will kick off October 7-12, 2014. The Askew Student Life Center has teamed up with the FSU Film School and the College of Medicine for this fundraiser to benefit Alzheimer's Research that was founded by Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller Rogen (BFA 2003). For the FSU HFCU crowdrise.com link to donate use our bit link http://bit.ly/1qRBnno Check out the full lineup of events next week when they are posted on the movies.fsu.edu page. It will be a week of comedy and fun for those of you in Tallahassee, and a chance to give to a charity started by one of our own even if you cannot attend. From Sara Bennett Crowley (BFA 04) “The Boxtrolls is #1 in UK and has the highest opening in 6 international markets for any LAIKA film. We are #2 in Mexico, only second to The Maze Runner (looking at you Wes (Ball BFA 02) and Thomas Scott Nowlin (BFA 03 - congrats!)!” NOTE: The Maze Runner opens in the US on 9/19 and the Boxtrolls on 9/26. Sara was Marketing Coordinator and Script Sup for the Boxtrolls. Wes was the director of the Maze Runner and TS was a writer. From Jim Lakin (BFA 01) “I've opened up a Production Sound Rentals House with an on site ADR/VoiceOver stage in Marina Del Rey and I am always happy to give deals and support to FSU alums and so on. Passes are on sale now for the Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival please visit http://www.GCUFF.org for more information.” From Kelly Bumford (BFA 09) “I spent all summer coordinating a new series for Esquire Network called “The Short Game” about kid golfing prodigies! It’s based of the Netflix documentary of the same name - and will be airing in November. I’m currently working on MTV’s Catfish and will be traveling all around the country this fall for that show. My documentary “the SALIMA PROJECT” has been accepted into the Awareness Festival here in LA. The doc features a drama group in a small village in rural Malawi who is using theater to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention and squash taboos within their community. I produced, shot, and edited the film, and I’m pleased to announce it’s premiere at the Awareness Festival. It is premiering next Sunday Sept. 21st, and tickets can be purchased at: http://awarenessfilmfestival2014.sched.org/event/899c914d9a050c15ecb3c35224377b2b#.VBNnI2RdXwc Please let me know if you’d like to attend, I might be able to work out a better deal for you! If you support education or know families with children in that range, please spread the word.” As you know our amazing development people, Fred Salancy and Dana Brookes have both left the University to seek other opportunities. So now the Foundation is looking for candidates for a new position and of course we’d love to see one of our alumni selected. Here is a position description. https://fnd app.foundation.fsu.edu/PositionVacancy/JobAnnouncement.aspx?pid=1203 I realize the description is heavy on fund raising experience, but would like you to look at it anyway. They might consider raising money for films as part of that experience. The person would be located in Tallahassee and would have to be willing to work evenings/weekends and to travel, but it’s a great job and you’d work closely with the Dean and me!
