Warren Report 3/21/13

Going to be in NY on May 7?  Mark your calendars for our screening of the Best Films of 2012 at the Angelika Film Center, New York, NY, 7:30 screening, reception to follow, place TBA.  From Joey Daoud (BFA  08)  “I got my first New York Times byline for a video I produced in last Sunday's edition. It was for an A1 story on baby boomers moving into retirement communities in South Florida. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/10/us/at-florida-condos-too-young-to-retire-but-not-to-grab-a-deal.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 From Ryan Spindell (MFA 07)  “I'm super excited to announce that the new short film I wrote and directed, THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM will have it's east coast premiere in the Tribeca Film Festival this April. I co-produced the short with the cinematographer Nathan Lavine-Heany (MFA 08) and a ton of other amazing FSU alums. (Most of the crew really.) You can see the trailer and get more info on the film here:   http://therootoftheproblemmovie.com/ From Miles Kahn (BFA 97)  “The following post is self-congratulatory. No need to respond unless you wish to mock me, which I encourage. Myself and my producing partners, Stu Miller and Tim Greenberg, were honored today by The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences today for producing "Television With a Conscience" for our special DL Hughley: The Endangered List. Frankly, I'm just honored to mentioned alongside Linda Ellerbee of Nick News.http://www.deadline.com/2013/03/television-academy-honors-2013-winners/ From Ruth Hernandez (MFA 98)  “I've got some good news to share! I was accepted in 2013's NALIP/HBO Latino Writers Lab!  1 yes for about 100 no's. ha ha ha but I'm still at it :)  My love to FSU!   http://www.nalip.org/LWL.php “ Film School Community Liaison Dave Schmeling’s screenplay The Colony is a finalist in the Sunscreen Film Festival, St. Petersburg, April 18-20.  Florida has plenty of seedy trailer parks.  The Colony is something else.  A failed breeding colony from a distant planet hides out scamming nearby casinos until rescue arrives.  Imagine Cocoon meets The Graduate. From Nat Sanders (BFA 02)  “I just got back from SXSW, where the latest film i edited - SHORT TERM 12 - won both the grand jury and audience awards for narrative features. Our reviews so far have been pretty overwhelmingly fantastic, and I am so proud of this movie and can't wait for everyone to get a chance to see it. This is my first time writing in the Warren Report, so I don't know if I'm supposed to be all comprehensive here. But since editing Medicine for Melancholy (still my favorite working experience) for Barry, (Jenkins, BFA 03).  I've met a lot of filmmakers and have had the good fortune to have a good run so far. I've worked with some great people like Lynn Shelton and the Duplass Brothers and made a lot of good friends along the way. I've worked too hard at times and traveled for jobs a bit too much, and independent film isn't always the most lucrative (I still drive a 1998 car with almost 200,000 miles on it), but I wouldn't trade it for anything else. My next project is going to be editing an HBO pilot the Duplass Brothers are making, which I'm really excited about. From Steve Kwant (BFA 01)  “Just wanted to let you know that THE AMERICAN BIBLE CHALLENGE season 2 (I'm Lead Assistant Editor) premieres Thursday, March 21 at 9pm on Game Show Network. It's been quite a roller coaster getting these episodes through postproduction, but all of us here are pretty proud of the show. It's a lot of fun, and it's something the whole family can enjoy it together. Also got to connect with Joe Hackman and Lauren Brinkman (Both BFA 12)  on their first adventure out here and show them around the Avid bay.” From Tucker Bowen (BFA  00)  "Very proud of this episode (Vol 5, Ep 3 - Keith & Marc) of Biography's "I Survived" that I helped develop. (Tucker has researched and developed several episodes for Natural History New Zealand.) It tells the story of a few US contractors captured by FARC guerillas in Colombia after their plane crashes into the jungle. Now out on iTunes.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/tv-season/i-survived-vol.-5/id607228974?ign-mpt=uo%3D4 From Darren Hoffman (BFA 05)  “After over 3 years of development, we began our "soft launch" release of the Tutti Music Player for iPad.You can access it here: http://itun.es/i6JN8FS   // (USA iTunes Store only)We'd love for you to download the free player... One last thing, Tara Iarusso (MFA '97) and I had a baby girl in September. Skylar Page Huynh is awesome at staying awake all night and not sleeping. She's a true filmmaker at heart."  From Adam Lucas (MFA 08):  I'm currently raising funds for my second feature-length film THE RETREAT, to be filmed in Georgia, Philadelphia, and NYC.  Our first film, LOCOMOTIVE, was shot by Nathan Levine-Heaney (MFA 08) and edited by Alessandro Soares (MFA 01)  and Nils Arrington (MFA 07).LOCOMOTIVE recently entered festival contention, and has already been granted a Royal Reel award at the 2013 Canada International Film Festival, and offered two other festival showings. Please give the page a look and feel free to share it with your family and friends. A book signing will follow the reading; Baggott will sign books purchased at the event as well as books that guests bring with them. The local indie "Bookshelf Midtown" will be on site selling copies of "Pure" and "Fuse."  As a bonus for this event, we will be giving away a free copy of one of Baggott's books to a limited number of people who register. Baggott also writes under the pen names N.E. Bode and Bridget Asher and her work spans everything from romance to children's literature to sci-fi to poetry, so you never know what you might get. The "Pure" trilogy is in development to become a major motion picture with Fox 2000. One of the producers of "The Twilight Saga" is on board, as well as the director of "Smashed" and "Spectacular Now." Don't miss this chance to say you "met her way back when"! Tickets are $15, $10 for students and TLH Book Club members, and include the pre- and post-reading reception with wine and beer. Join the book club at www.Tallahassee.com/bookclub. “ All proceeds will go to our local Newspapers In Education (NIE) foundation which provides students in the Big Bend with copies of the newspaper, as well as instructional support to ensure classroom success.  Tickets are available online at www.Tallahassee.com/fuse. From Dustin McLean (MFA 12)  “I am working as an intern at a development company and one of my main jobs is finding new interns.  It is a new company called Beneficial Entertainment in the Culver City area. Warren Report 4/4/13

SAVE THE DATE. The Film School has set the dates for our spring auditions – April 14 & 21, 10am-7pm.  Stay tuned for more info, including a link to view synopses and script sides for each of the films. From Jon Swindall (MFA  01)  “ Things have been going great here in Atlanta. I’ve got two little ones now - a boy (16m.o.) and a girl (2.5y.o.) which is awesome and so much fun.  But - our hands are full!  Work’s been amazing and the projects I've been working on are so different from each other. I’ve been producing, directing and shooting on t.v. shows, commercials, and features.   My company, Swindy Films, has a new show that airs on Thursday's starting April 18th at midnight on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.  It’s called “Your Pretty Face is Going To Hell.” It’s an office comedy set in hell and it’s...Hellarious!  Check out the trailer:  http://www.swindyfilms.com/#/your-pretty-face-is-going-to-hell/   I produced the show and also was the Director of Photography.  We had an amazing crew that teamed up to pull it off.  We were lucky to have several rockstar F.S.U. film alums who played a huge part in the series: JD Taylor (BFA 93)  was the first A.D. and he kept hell moving and Alison Troxell's (BFA 93) and Tom Capello’s(BFA 95)  Crazy Legs Productions brought the heat and produced the Visual FX for the show.  This is by far the funniest project I’ve worked on with talented writers/directors and an incredible group of comedic actors, and sweet special effects.   So - Set your DVRs - talk it up - and please follow us on twitter:@swindyfilms.  Also - I’d love to hear from the FSU network.  My email’s jon@swindyfilms.com “Shane Spiegel (BFA 11) here. I wanted to let you know that a web commercial I produced called "Kids Talk Dating Problems" was on the Today Show twice this week, the front page or Reddit, and has gone viral online. The commercial has three young kids talking as if they had an adult dating life, and is for a dating book. The author is Matthew Hussey currently on NBC's "Ready for Love". Michael Smith (BFA 12) was the amazing Art Director.  You can view the video here: http://youtu.be/x48drnmWAXU The alums who have formed M.E.G.A Media, Eric Davis, Andrew Fairbank, Mark Mulcahy, and Gerrad Wilson (all MFA 12) got to see their project on TV last week.  It was on the MSG Network "Mike Woodson: Walk With Me" -- a 30min special on the head coach of the NY Knicks Mike Woodson.  They put a lot of work into this project and were excited to share it with the world.  It replays at a sort of random schedule. Anyone can check out the schedule at www.MSG.com but for instance it airs at:  Fri: 3:00PM, 3:30PM   Tues 9th: 3:00PM, 3:30PM   Friday: 3:30PM  It basically depends on the Knicks game schedule, as they usually play it before each home game pregame show.  From Steve Acevedo MFA '05  “I was the Director of Photography last year on the feature film, SATELLITE OF LOVE. It's just been released on iTunes, Amazon and other digital platforms. It stars Zach Knighton (Happy Endings, Flash Forward, The Hitcher), Janina Gavankar (True Blood, The League, The L-Word) and Nathan Phillips (Wolf Creek, Chernobyl Diaries). It's a beautiful independent film that we shot in 19, extremely hot, summer days in Austin, Texas. if you get a chance to watch it, let me know what you think (steve@steveacevedo.com), and please spread the word and support independent film. Website: http://www.satelliteoflovemovie.com   iTunes:  http://bit.ly/WRy4O8” From Kathy Barber (BFA 97) and Director of the FSU Student Life Center:  “The SLC group has been voting on the DEMAND IT site to bring Seth Rogan (Lauren Miller's (BFA 03)  husband) to FSU with his new movie. If you can send out the link below or even get the FSU staff to DEMAND IT, FSU will be at the top in no time. We are currently at 3rd place in the voting.  http://tinyurl.com/bnkv9af “ Zdenka Turecek (MFA-W 12). Wondering if anyone is heading to Cannes this year? I received basic accreditation as a cinephile and am looking to possibly meet and room with some others during May 15 to 20. If anyone is interested, my e-mail is zdenkaturecek@gmail.com. From Sylwia Dudzinska (MFA  09)  “Today (3/21/13) is my 400th day which means that officially starting tomorrow I'm DGA! It's been a wonderful two and a half years in the program, I couldn't have asked for a better run. So I guess my newest announcement would be, who needs a union AD?! I’ve done my first day as a 2nd 2nd on Franklin and Bash and am now moving forward with day playing on the pilot Delirium!” From Emily Burgess (Reb’s Assistant) “Captain America is beginning filming early spring this year in my hometown area of Cleveland, Ohio.  They are currently recruiting for crew members for the production.  More information can be found here (including where to send resumes):  http://www.wkyc.com/news/article/283486/110/Marvel-seeking-locals-for-Captain-America-sequel-crew “  Note, producer on the project is Stephen Broussard (MFA 03).  “Independent documentary film on the Seminoles is looking for on-set production assistants and experienced sound recordist with gear for a shoot taking place between April 17 and April 20. We will be shooting for the next 12 months on and off, so for the right people there will be more shoots to come over the next year. Please email resumes to james@7thart.com for consideration. Initial shooting dates: April 17 - April 20 Location: Broward County  Send resumes to: james@7thart.com “ Video Storyteller/Shooter/Editor/Motion Graphics w/Great Sense of Humor - Relocation Required (Sun Valley, ID)  We are SCOTTEVEST (www.scottevest.com), a clothing line famous for our tons of hidden pockets, and we are currently in a major growth phase! Even better... we're based in Sun Valley, Idaho (ski, snowboard and summer haven!). This position is based in Sun Valley, so if you're not familiar with SV and willing to relocate, read no further.  We are seeking a hilarious storyteller to join our in-house marketing team. The medium for these "stories" is video, and you will be responsible for scripting, setting up, shooting, editing and motion graphics... but while the technical skills are vital to succeeding, the mindset and talent for crafting a story is even more important. This is a very fast-paced position at a quickly growing company, and you will be joining a close-knit team who already knows the lay of the land. You MUST have a great sense of humor (and it can't just be your Mom who thinks so), be organized, creative, a fast worker and a fast learner. We appreciate the art of filmmaking, but our goals are brand and marketing driven, and we're not looking to craft artistic masterpieces (well, maybe a few). Videos will range from down-and-dirty one take videos (slap on an intro/outro > render > post) to teleprompter driven product demos with b-roll, cutaways and VO to behind-the-scenes documentary/mockumentary filming of office antics. Fair warning: we shoot A LOT on greenscreen, and although we have a pretty sweet studio setup, if you can't key cleanly and quickly you will not do well here. 99% of what we shoot is for the web, so be up on encoding, youtube posting, etc. End goal: put out videos that people NEED to pass around to all their friends... viral.”  NOTE:  if you are interested email me and I’ll send you the complete position description. SCREENPLAY CONTEST DEADLINES: 4/15/2013   Scriptapalooza TV Competition4/22/2013   Scriptapalooza Screenwriting Competition4/26/2013   Acclaim Film & TV Contest 5/1/2013   PAGE International Screenwriting Awards5/1/2013   Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting5/1/2013   Script Pipeline Screenwriting & TV Competition5/15/2013   Screamfest Horror Film Festival Note:  I have no idea why these dates print so strangely – could be because I stole this and can't figure out how to fix it. This week with the Tallahassee Film Society:  “• "Orchestra of Exiles"- This Friday, April 5 & Sunday, April 7!
