From Jaye Davidson (MFA 10) “In the Bog has released its pilot episode through iheardin.com. Please check out my interview with director Alana McNair (MFA '11). Cinematography by Brian Gutiérrez Aramayo (MFA '10). Editing by Hillary Winnie Lavin (MFA '11).”http://iheardin.com/2014/02/21/filmmaker-spotlight-interview-with-alana-mcnair-pilot-director-of-in-the-bog/ From Matthew O’Brien (MFA 08) “I’m currently in rewrites on an untitled kidnapping thriller I wrote. Trevor Kaufman (my manager) is producing along with Michael Glassman of Outlaw Productions. We recently attached Carolyn Miller (Under Still Waters) as director, and I’m working on rewrites with her as we fast track the script toward completion. I also spent about six months this year working with Tomasz Thomson (Snowman’s Land) on an original spec idea, a thriller, that he would co-write and direct. I have a “story by” credit on the project and Michael Glassman and Trevor Kaufman are taking it out to other writers who can finish it on spec. I’m working with Trevor to put the finishing touches on another spec, Ark One, that we’ll be taking out to directors over the next few months. “ From Michael Vargas (BFA 11) “I've been working at Guillermo del Toro's company, Mirada, for almost a year now, in editorial. It's an awesome company that does pretty much anything. We deal mainly in advertising (Exxon-Mobil, DisneyWorld, Vizio, to name a few), but we did develop Pacific Rim in-house, along with producing the introduction sequence. We also do music videos, and have made apps. It's a VFX heavy house, so it's been a really good experience learning the post process in our ever-changing, technologically driven industry. The company is cool because it is very reminiscent of film school, in that, you can learn/do anything you want in any department that may interest you. Everybody is very open and many long hours are spent perfecting our craft, just brings me back to FSU. They've been giving me a lot bigger things to handle over the past couple months, and my latest was being able to sound design and do the final mix-down for the Katy Perry "Dark Horse" music video that we did, here. You all can check it out here: http://www.vevo.com/watch/USUV71400083. And just to point out how wide our film school network is, George Telonis (MFA 2012) and Corey Womack (MFA Writing 2012) worked on the live action crew of the video, so it was cool having them in Mirada for a week. Pass on my thanks to Chuck for all he went through to teach me the sound world!” From Christina Campagnola (BFA 12) “I have been hired as an assistant at Paradigm Talent and Literary Agency in the NYC office. I met a Paradigm literary agent at the Sundance Film Festival who helped me get my foot in the door. Definitely excited to learn about the industry from a different side and ultimately see where this path leads!” From Ira Brown (MFA 13) “I recently started working as the sales coordinator at Variety Insight, an entertainment tracking and data service owned by PMC, the same media company that runs Variety magazine and Deadline. The role calls for me to be the assistant to the president of Insight, and I do quite a bit of billing and client services work as well. It's been great so far! After going through 4 different internships and being down to my last fifty dollars in Los Angeles, I couldn't be more grateful than I am now. If anyone wants to meet up sometime to talk about life, writing, LA, etc, or would be interested in the service (its closest comparison is Studio System), please email me at ira.brown@variety.com” From Sylwia Dudzinska (MFA 09) “My new gig starts on Monday and Ill be with the new show About A Boy working over at the Universal lot til April as their new 2nd 2nd!” From Bill Kelly, actor in many of our student films: “I landed a small speaking role in the new feature film, “MIDNIGHT RIDER”, starring William Hurt, Zoey Deutch, Bradley Whitford and others. I shoot on March 18th in Savannah. Here's my IMDB link too just in case anyone wants to see what I'm doing. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1536771/” Nice Close-Up interview with Rex Metz in the March 2014 edition of the ASC magazine! For tickets go to: https://atlasarts.secure.force.com/ticket/#details_a0Si00000023uvJEAQWe received an email from Executive Director of the Y’allywood Film Festival directed to our faculty, but am sharing it in the Warren Report in case any of you might want to pitch a panel or a talk. “I am writing to inform the esteemed faculty of the film department of FSU of a new film festival and filmmakers' summit to take place in Atlanta later on in 2014. The purpose of this festival is to bring southern filmmakers together to discuss and conceptualize the voice of the filmmaker in the New South, a recent production haven for big studios. If there are any faculty members with any expertise in this topic, or who would like to participate in the festival by speaking at the summit or submitting a film for the festival, please pass my information along. We are still in our early stages of development, but there will soon be more information at yallywood.org. There, anyone who is interested can enter their e-mail address to receive updates as they occur. As far as panels go, I already have Godfrey Cheshire on board to participate. He has been writing about the south's image in cinema for the past 30+ years and directed the documentary Moving Midway which is a good representation of the change from the "Old South" into the "New South". The film serves as a good starting point to lead off a discussion in the changing perspectives of southern filmmakers.” “The Big Sky Film Institute (BSFI) is seeking applications for the position of Executive Director. The Executive Director is responsible for overall organizational operation, staff management, planning and budgeting; and for the planning and successful presentation of the 2015 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival (BSDFF), 2015 Big Sky Doc Shop, and the year-round weekly Big Sky Film Series. Applicants must be available to start work full-time in Missoula, Montana, on May 1, 2014. The Executive Director role requires strong organizational leadership to maximize existing strategies and develop new directions, while conducting festival and film series planning, administration, budgeting, fundraising, and staff management in an effective manner and in accordance with policies set by the Big Sky Film Institute Board of Directors. The Executive Director is the chief staff member of the organization and is the public "face" of the annual Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and weekly year-round Big Sky Film Series.” Email me if you would like complete information on this position. IFP Independent Filmmaker Labs Open for Submissions!Deadines to Apply: March 7 (Documentary) / April 4 (Narrative)IFP's unique yearlong mentorship program supports first-time feature directors when they need it most: through the completion, marketing and distribution of their films. Focusing exclusively on low-budget features (<$1million), this highly immersive program provides filmmakers with the technical, creative and strategic tools necessary to launch their films - and their careers. Through the Labs, IFP works to ensure that talented emerging voices receive the support, resources, and industry exposure necessary to reach audiences. Open to all first time feature documentary and narrative directors with films in post-production. Twenty projects (10 documentaries and 10 narratives) are selected for the annual program which has three components: the Time Warner Completion Lab in the spring, the Marketing Lab in September, and the Distribution Lab in December. All Lab projects also automatically participate in the Project Forum of IFP’s Independent Film Week. Upcoming deadlines for the 2014 Labs are March 7 (Documentary) and April 4 (Narrative). For more info and to apply, click here..Scriptapalooza Deadline March 3. This year we are awarding over $50,000 in cash and software prizes. Our First Place Winner will receive $10,000 Cash and all our 7 Genre Winners will receive $500 Cash. Every script that is entered into Scriptapalooza is read by either a producer, manager or agent. We do not use "readers” or "regular people” because they cannot do anything with your script. We go right to the source - a producer, manager or agent, they can make a difference, they can option your script, buy it, set-up a meeting or go straight to the studio with it. Now when you enter Scriptapalooza, you have the opportunity to get feedback. Your feedback will include a logline, a synopsis and your feedback totaling 4-5 pages of notes. Get the best feedback in the industry. But the most important prize of all is that Scriptapalooza will promote, pitch and push the Semifinalists and higher for an entire year.
